It's that time of the year again; each and every blog in the blogosphere is compiling their top-2007 lists. On MovieBarometer Azktor kicked off with the '10 Most Popular Stars of 2007' posting, and since there are just a few days left before 2008 begins, I will continue with the 10 most popular movies of 2007!
Unfortunately I couldn't find any data on European box-office returns, so we'll focus on the United States.

  1. Spider-Man 3 ($ 336,530,303)

  2. Shrek the Third ($ 321,012,359)

  3. Transformers ($ 319,071,806)

  4. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End ($ 309,420,425)

  5. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix ($ 292,004,738)

  6. The Bourne Ultimatum ($ 227,471,070)

  7. 300 ($ 210,614,939)

  8. Ratatouille ($ 206,445,654)

  9. The Simpsons Movie ($ 183,132,370)

  10. Wild Hogs ($ 168,273,550)

For next year I personally would like to see some more arthouse movies, but then again I don't think that will happen because of the monster-budgets hollywood filmmakers have access to.

These are the actors and actresses Yahoo! users could not get enough of.

1. Jessica Alba
Jessica Alba was anything but an "Invisible Woman" this year, appearing in the Fantastic Four sequel, the gross-out comedy Good Luck Chuck and the squirm-inducing thriller, Awake.

2. Megan Fox
While the cars turning into robots were cool, some would say the most impressive special effect in Transformers was 21-year-old Megan Fox.

3. Emma Watson
Emma Watson had her fans on the edge of their seats when it looked like she might not return for the last two Harry Potter films, but thankfully, she decided to stick with the series until graduation.

4. Jessica Biel
This year, Jessica Biel stretched her range in the Iraq War drama Home of the Brave, but it wearing that stretchy cat costume in I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry that took real courage.

5. Aishwarya Rai
What do you do for an encore after being called "The Most Beautiful Woman in the World?" If you're Aishwarya Rai, you star in your first American action movie, The Last Legion.

6. Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie made more headlines this year for her family life than her film roles, but she still earned a Golden Globe nod for A Mighty Heart and got demonic in the eye-popping Beowulf.

7. Shia LaBeouf
Former child star Shia LaBeouf showed that he was all grown up when he headlined the surprise hit thriller Disturbia and then stood up to 30-foot-tall robots in Transformers.

8. Scarlett Johansson
Coming into the year as Esquire Magazine's "Sexiest Woman Alive," Scarlett Johansson took Manhattan as the lead in the big-screen version of the bestselling The Nanny Diaries.

9. Lena Headey
British beauty Lena Headey broke through on American shores in a big way as the lone female in the testosterone-powered epic 300.

10. Daniel Radcliffe
A teenage Harry Potter got angry in this summer's The Order of the Phoenix, but it was news of his nude stage appearance in "Equus" that got Daniel Radcliffe the most attention this year.

If you have any comments regarding this top 10, please discuss it with us in our Forum.

Now the Toronto International Film Festival has ended and the results are known, It’s time to post a follow up to my post Toronto: Generating Oscars Buzz. One of the films that did especially well on the festival was David Cronenberg's Eastern Promises. The movie won the much coveted people's choice award, which is considered an Oscar indicator. The movie, starring Naomi Watts and Viggo Mortensen tells us about good and evil, family values, respect and leadership in the London underworld of Russian mobsters. One of the scenes (a bathhouse death struggle) is already being talked about as an instant classic.

The second place in the race for the People's Choice award wet to Jason Reitman's Juno. It's the story of a pregnant high school teen told in the language of high school comedy. 20-year-old actress Ellen Page, also known from the film Hard Candy, plays the main role.

Third place in the People's Choice race went to the anti-Iraq documentary Body of War. It came as a complete surprise that this film, directed by Phil Donahue won this award, for this was not anticipated by the response the movie generated.

Another true festival hit, Guy Maddin's My Winnipeg, won best Canadian film. In the film, Maddin reveres and satirizes both a long tradition of Canadian documentary filmmaking and his hometown (Winnipeg).

The international film critics'prize was awarded to a Mexican film, La Zona, directed by first-timer Rodrigo Pla.
The Argentinean director Anahi Berneri went home with the artistic innovation prize for his film Encarnacion, about a B-movie actress returning to her prudish small town.

The Toronto Film Festival usually creates a lot of buzz around the possible nominations for the Oscars. The Festival, featuring 349 films from 55 countries, features the North American premieres of many films that will be considered for key awards. Since the festival still has 5 days to go, it’s way too early to get a good sense of which films will be front-runners, but we will try to summarize the buzz. The nominations itself will be advertised in January, so obviously the picture will look different by then. Some movies will have dropped out the race, but maybe we 'guessed' right. Only time will tell us.

One of the films that seems destined to stay in the race is Atonement, a major buzz generator in both the Venice and Toronto International Film Festivals. It stars Keira Knightley and James McAvoy as a pre-WWII love couple driven apart by class prejudice.

Further on there are two buzz-generating performances, one of them being Cate Blanchett. You would expect the buzz to be generated by the heavily-hyped Elizabeth: The Golden Age, in which she plays the 16th century English monarch, but instead of it her role as Bob Dylan in I'm not There has been praised. A nomination as supporting actress would be a possibility.

Casey Affleck's role as Robert Ford alongside Brad Pitt in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford has also generated a lot of positive responses. Not only by the public, but the film has also been lauded by critics.

Critics also climbed their pens in a positive manner for the Sean Penn-directed Into the Wild and the Coen Brother's No Country for Old Men, which was also well received at the Cannes Film Festival.

What's up in the world of movies? It seems like they can only release sequels at this moment! Let's see... We got
- Shrek the Third
- Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
- Ocean's Thirteen
- Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End
- Live Free or Die Hard (Die Hard 4)
- Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter 5)
- The Bourne Ultimatum

Nothing bad about releasing sequels, but maybe it would be nice to see a new movie for a change... Off course the producers are also releasing some new movies, but they don't get that much attention as they should have. Most of them are being overshadowed by all the big sequel-productions.
I mean, why can't they just use a small percentage of their sequel-budget to promote the smaller and more unknown movies. Maybe that'll make the movie landscape a bit less flat! And what's the deal anyway with releasing all these big movies just before the summer really starts off? Everyone knows that people won't go to the cinema when it's hot outside and the days are still long... I know the studio's gotta earn money, but maybe they'd better release their movies at the end of the year... But that's just my opinion.

Meanwhile we're still developing and testing new features behind the scenes, and we're rewriting some of the code (all behind the scenes off course). I advise you to keep tuned and watch the new features fly in.

Unfortunately I haven't been catching up with all the movie-awards shows lately. So it wasn't a surprise that I missed the nominations for this years MTV awards (june 3rd).
I will post the nominees as soon as possible to the forum with their links to the movie pages. When it's posted, you can follow the link to the nominees.

And by the way, I've added a new feature! On a user's profile page, you can now see his/her votes!
